Rogation Sunday

From the Head Gardener

Rogation Sunday is traditionally the Sunday before Ascension Day (Thursday), when members of the parish are reminded to ask for God’s protection of the plants growing around us. It seems a natural time to take another step in our journey from church grounds that had become unruly and overgrown to grounds that support our mission of welcoming parishioners and guests alike.

Last summer, we spent a great deal of time and money to start the transformation of our gardens, but that was the easy part.  Maintaining the gardens takes a different kind of dedication, and that is what we will ask you to help with starting on Rogation Sunday.

Starting Sunday, there will be markers in the gardens and a map and sign-up list in the narthex. Head gardener Clarice Gregory asks that parishioners “adopt” a garden that they will agree to care for over the next year.  Some garden sections may only require periodic mowing or weed “eating”.  Some should be easy to pull weeds from, as they have a heavy layer of mulch.  Finally, some will require pulling weeds and then pushing wheelbarrow loads of mulch (from a pile soon to appear) and spreading it on them to keep future weeds under control.
Please consider what you can commit to as a family, or as an ad hoc garden team and sign up for this important piece of St. Benedict evangelism.
