/News From Our Bishop
Becky is remembered at St. Benedict with love and gratitude.
The Rev. Rebecca “Becky” Jean Scott was born on June 15, 1943. Her family joined the Episcopal Church and attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Long Beach, California, when she was twelve. In the 1950s and early 1960s, she became aware of social justice issues through the clergy she met, who were deeply committed to social justice ministry. It was these experiences that helped shape her awareness of God’s inclusive love.
In 1961, she completed her associate’s degree in early childhood education from Long Beach City College in Long Beach, California, and earned another associate degree in theatre arts in 1971. Becky continued to take courses over the summers in 1962-1963 at California State College in Long Beach.
She met her husband, James “Jim” Baxter Scott, and was married, and they have two children, Anne Marie Scott & Robert Edward Scott. She later worked for State Farm Insurance in Human Resources, starting in 1986, in DuPont, Washington. Her family started attending service at St. James Episcopal Church in Kent in 1990. At St. James, she was a licensed Eucharistic Minister, a church school teacher, a Senior Warden, a delegate to Diocesan Convention, and an acolyte trainer/coordinator. She was also involved with Cursillo and Kairos. Becky started taking courses through the Diocesan School of Ministry & Theology from 1998 to 2003.
In 2000, she was called to serve as a deacon because she wanted to be a voice for the marginalized and to help others in their search for God. Becky’s sponsoring congregation was St. James in Kent. Her passion for ministry came from her pastoral sensitivity and personal presence.
She conducted her fieldwork at St. Benedict's Episcopal Church in Lacey, WA, from 2004 to 2005. There, she continued to develop her ministerial skills. She was an alternate worship leader at the Panorama City Retirement Center and served as a chaplain to the Discernment and Call Committee as the committee worked to create and implement the parish profile and call a new vicar. She was ordained as a deacon on June 25, 2005, at Saint Mark’s Cathedral by Bishop Warner.
Becky served as a deacon at St. James from 2005 until 2007. At St. James, she did a presentation on Inner Healing and oversaw acolyte training. In 2006, Becky also participated in a multifaith AIDS ministry. In 2006, she served as a hospice volunteer and was part of the parish prayer chain responding to parishioners' prayer requests.
She then served at St. Christopher's Church and St. Benedict's Church in the Olympia area from 2007 to 2015. Becky was involved with Kairos Prison Ministry in Purdy and was a flood recovery volunteer in Rochester, WA. She was also part of Community Kitchen and Camp Quixote for the Homeless. Becky then served at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Lakewood, WA. Although she retired in 2016, she continued to serve the congregation until 2021. At St. Mary’s Church, she participated in the Missions to Seafarers ditty bag drive and worked with the parish nurse and others to develop a forum on end-of-life issues. The local community theatre that Becky supported held a winter coat drive modeled after one that she started. She then served at Christ Church in Puyallup.
She was active in the diocese, serving on the Commission on Ministry and serving as a mentor to students in the Diocese of Olympia’s IONA School.
She enjoyed gardening, reading, crafting, and spending time with family and friends. During the last few years of her life, Becky enjoyed painting, taking several classes, and setting up her easel in her room at her daughter's house.
Becky died on April 10, 2026. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 2, at 2:00 pm, at Christ Church, Puyallup.
Please join me in prayer for Becky and all those who loved and cared for her. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.
Blessings,
+Phil
