The St. Benedict Memorial Committee Fund was established in 1983. Its purpose was to repair, upgrade, and beautify the Columbarium area. The upgrade began in 2005, building a pergola, installing a cobblestone path, renovating the decaying cement Columbarium top, and adding a surrounding step. Plants and trees were moved and trimmed. The concept was to build an outdoor room to be used for burials and a place of prayer and solitude for those wishing to visit the resting place of their loved ones.

In the 1980s, our parishioners saved Green Stamps and Betty Crocker box tops from baking mixes and cereal to purchase all the dishes and silverware we still have. Friends and family also pitched in. It was quite a project!

In 1980, while our church building was being designed and built, we met at St. Martin’s Student Union building (it’s still there). The students often had parties the night before. We walked into hay and beer on the floor, backed up toilets, and food everywhere. Gourdy Minoza always got there early to make sure everything got cleaned up and then set up all the chairs. One Sunday, Bishop Cochran came for some baptisms, and forgotten on the readerboard above the kitchen window were several 4 letter words. Yep, he noticed!

Tony Irving made most of the furniture we use in our Sanctuary and Nave. Prayer kneelers, Gospel book holder for altar, Ambry for consecrated sacraments, and the Credence table for the altar, just to name a few.

Don’t you love our floors? We had concrete floors everywhere but the parish hall until 1990, when carpeting was put in. We might be ready for new floors in the hallway.

When the building was designed, our architect was Bill Kruger. His wife, June, was our 1st Sacristan and also in charge of the kitchen. There are huge islands in both spaces, and they are 2 of the largest rooms in the building. It’s all in who you know!

At one time, our church was full of families. There were about 30 kids in Sunday school through 6th grade. We bought the blue sliding doors and then used dividers on wheels to separate 2 of the classrooms before there was a library in that space. We had a large and active youth group as well. At one point, we rented the white house across the street for their meeting space. There was a youth representative on the Vestry as well.

We used to go on field trips. We went to Jesus of Nazareth at the Amphitheater in Puyallup, Billy Graham in Seattle, we sang the National Anthem at the Tacoma Rainiers’ game, and we went to the Episcopal Convention to be presented as a Parish after being a mission of St. John’s. (I can’t find the date)
