Ascension Day: May 9, Potluck at 5:30 p.m., Service at 7:00 p.m.

We hope that you will join us Thursday May 9, beginning at 5:30 for a Potluck Supper followed by the Ascension Day Service at 7:30 p.m.

The Solemnity of the Ascension of Jesus Christ, also called Ascension Day, Ascension Thursday, or sometimes Holy Thursday, commemorates the bodily Ascension of Jesus into heaven. It is a major feast day in The Episcopal Church.

It might surprise you to read, ‘Major Feast Day’ but there you have it.  The Day was elevated in the 1979 Book of Common Prayer but has not gained the traction that the Great Vigil of Easter (also highlighted in the 1979 BCP) has gained.

We proclaim Christ Ascension each Sunday and weekday Eucharist in the Nicene Creed, On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. It would appear that Ascension Day figures prominently in our Creeds.  The Creed of Athanasius who spoke eloquently of the Incarnation also references the Ascension in surprising ways. “Christ was made man that we might be made God.”― Athanasius of Alexandria, On the Incarnation
